Gnome-Do: A powerful, speedy, and sexy remote control for your GNOME Desktop
Been using it for quite a long time and the experience is great!. Gnome-do is a launcher for pretty much almost anything you want to do. From the site, It say gnome-do is inspired by Quicksilver and GNOME Launch Box. I myself don't know what this two things doing as I never use it. But, with gnome-do I almost never use Gnome's Main Menu. Why? you might ask. Well, because I just need to press SUPER+SPACE and type what application or action I want, hit enter and there, what I want is laid out on my screen. Give it a try and tell me what you think?
Here's some example of how this little beast speed up my morning boot up. Every morning at work I'm working on a couple of files that need to be cleanup. Here's the sequence of how I get ready to filter the file before using gnome-do:
- Open up Firefox via Laucher in panel for downloading the file from gmail
- Open up Opera via Laucher in panel for processing the file in office's PHPMyAdmin. I always open my office related site using Opera
- Open up Nautilus via Places menu in panel for preparing file, creating new result dir, etc
- Open up Geany via
ALT+F2Run window for preparing the script for filtering the data - Open up FileZilla via Launcher in panel for uploading the unfiltered file to filtering server
Imagine how many mouse move there compared to this one when I use gnome-do:
SUPER+SPACE, type fi, hitRETURNto open firefoxSUPER+SPACE, type fil, hitRETURNto open filezillaSUPER+SPACE, type op, hitRETURNto open operaSUPER+SPACE, type ~, hitRETURNto open nautilusSUPER+SPACE, type ge, hitRETURNto open geany
This, along with embedded VTE in geany (I'll talk later about it) have greatly save my life!.
Stjerm: Gnome Quake Style Terminal
Saya kesulitan menemukan pengganti yakuake. Saya senang yakuake karena feature transparansi-nya. Sebenarnya ada sih, tilda. Tapi, rasanya kok berat sekali ya setiap pakai transparansi. Akhirnya, setelah googling sana-sini, saya ketemu stjerm. Hihihi, namanya aneh. Coba-coba pakai apt-get, wah sudah ada di repository, asiiik. Tinggal wah, gak ada di repository. Meluncur ke get-deb, asik adaaa. Download, lalu sudo apt-get install stjermsudo dpkg -i stjerm_0.11-0~getdeb1_i386.deb.
Setelah mencoba sebentar, ternyata memang benar seperti yang di katakan developernya di forum compiz-fusion:
It's point is to be minimalistic, to look nice and to work well with Compiz.
Graphical Disk Usage Analysis Using KDE/Gnome

After some time, some of us maybe have an out of space issue. Downloads, backup files, data files, trashes, etc. And all we know is that our disk usage is 97% used. How do we
know, which directory consume the most of it, what file in which directory, etc. Fear not! if you use Gnome, all you have to do is install Baobab application and have it analyze your disk. Or, if you use KDE, just install konq-plugins, a plugin collection for Konqueror. And activate File Size Mode in View Mode in your konqueror window. If you ask me which is better, I would prefer Konqueror plugin, because it's break down the result to it's file while Baobab only display directory size.
